One spring morning in 1977, we crawled out of our tent – relieved that the sun brought an end to a night of hiding from sand fleas. We had made the mistake of camping behind a sand dune and not right on the beach. At dusk, the sand fleas came out and started biting. The mosquito netting on the tent was not fine enough to keep them out and we spent a miserable night.
So, we were looking forward to something much better as we headed for the ferry that would take us to Isla Mujeres.
Isla Mujeres (the ‘Island of Women’) is a small island off the northeast coast of Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula. Isla Mujeres is close to Cancun, but is a complete contrast to that popular resort. Cancun is the perfect place if you want a modern hotel with all the amenities and frenetic day and night activities.
Isla Mujeres on the other hand is a rather tranquil cozy island. The people are friendly and accomodating, but much more relaxed than those at Cancun.
Soon a modern ferry pulled up to the dock and we boarded. We had to leave our car parked in a guarded lot. That always made me a bit nervous since we had it broken into the previous summer in Villahermosa.
Looking down into the water of the Mexican Caribbean from the top of that ferry was a treat. It was a beautiful sunny day and you could see the bottom of the Caribbean all the way out on the forty odd mile trip. There were areas where the bottom was light sandy color punctuated by other spots that were dark – representing the areas where there were coral reefs.
It was a very peaceful relaxing trip.
When we got to Isla Mujeres, we took our backpacks and headed off the ferry. The first sign we saw was one in English – “Glass Bottom Boat Rides.”
As we had been on a glass bottom boat before, we were thrilled with the opportunity to see some tropical reefs through the panoramic view of a glass bottom boat.
It was too late that day to go, so we went and got a motel. There were several decent motels at reasonable prices and we soon had a room overlooking the eastern beach of the island.
The next morning, after eating some of the food that we had brought with us in our packs, we headed for the glass bottom boat rides. I had snorkeling equipment with me in case there was an opportunity to use them.
After paying the fare, we were soon headed to the boat. The boat was not quite what we had expected. In Monterrey, the boat had accommodated about 30 people. This one was only big enough for about 7. It had an outboard motor and looked like it could not handle more than the calmest of waters.
We spent about forty five minutes going south along the western edge of Isla Mujeres to an area where the captain of the boat said that they fed fish frequently and there would be good numbers to see.
We kept expecting him to pull away the paneling on the bottom of the boat so we could see. We were looking forward to seeing what beautiful fish and coral there were.
The captain threw some fish food around the boat and the fish started swarming around. We again thought that the paneling was about to be moved. But, surprise! – he handed a box to the person seated closest to him. It had glass at one end. He explained that you put the box over the side of the boat and looked through the glass. Then you handed it to the next person.
My wife and I had a very hard time not laughing out loud at the captain and his ridiculous little box. Hardly a glass bottom boat!
However, we were able to each have a good turn and did see a lot of very pretty fish.
I took the opportunity, with the captain’s permission, to go over the side and snorkel with the fish. The other people on the boat had as much fun watching me as the fish I think.
The rest of our time on the island was spent touring the other attractions of the island including an incredible aquarium, but the glass bottom boat ride was the highlight of our time on Isla Mujeres.

ESCAPE ROUTE
Before a crisis arises, it is important to have an emergency plan.
? Put your plan down on paper and make sure that the whole household is familiar with it.
? Assess all entry and exit points. Decide on the best way out in the event of a criminal entering your home or of a fire. For example, if an intruder breaks into the house via a front entrance, or a fire breaks out, the family can escape through a window or opening at the back of the house. Certain windows and/or openings must be identified and expandable/retractable security barriers fitted to these. The keys for these barriers on these openings must be placed in a secret but accessible place.( Remember that a window is not an ideal escape route – broken glass is a hazard. A door is preferable…)
HOLIDAY ARRANGEMENTS
? Try not to leave your home unoccupied. If possible get a friend or relative to house-sit for you.
? Do not get a stranger to house-sit. If necessary, use an agency that specialises in this.
? Your home must never look unoccupied. Arrange for a friend or neighbour to leave your curtains in the usual open or closed positions, and mow your lawn, etc., for you. Let them keep the curtains slightly parted so that your house doesn’t have an empty look.
? Leave a telephone number and contact address with neighbours or any other reliable person so that you can be contacted in an emergency.
? Inform your armed response/alarm company that you will be away.
? Inform the police of your absence.
? Never leave an answering machine message that you are not at home. Say something like: “We can’t come to the phone right now…”
? Use timers to turn lights, televisions and sound systems on and off at different times to give your home a “lived-in look” when you’re away.
? If there’s a Neighbourhood Watch Program in your community, join it.
? Report any suspicious persons or vehicles to your local police.
? Be careful who you tell that you are going away!
? Don’t let mail, newspapers or flyers accumulate while you’re away, tipping off criminals. Have the post office hold mail, have newspapers suspended, and have a neighbour or friend clear away flyers.
? If possible (and safe), leave a car in your driveway or arrange for a neighbour to leave a car there from time to time.
Be alert
? When arriving at or departing from your home, look out for loiterers. Do not ignore such persons as they could be a danger to you and your household.
? Keep necessary emergency numbers clearly posted next to the telephone. These must be easily accessible when needed.
? Don’t leave valuables where they are visible through windows, etc. They might tempt potential burglars.
? Make an inventory of all the valuables in your household and store it somewhere other than your home.
? Mark valuables. (Etching, punching, etc.)
? Do not ignore any unusual sounds or noises, barking dogs, alarms, breaking glass, etc. Be very cautious when investigating. Rather have the police or your armed response company investigate for you.
? If you do not have a response facility and you are going to check outside, keep your family safe by locking the door behind you. If necessary they will be able to summon help for you
Guard personal information
Identity theft is a real threat and poses a real danger for the victim. Supply personal information, to anyone that asks, with great caution.
DRIVEWAY HIJACKING
One form of crime that is becoming increasingly popular is driveway hijacking.
? Be ready for the unexpected. The hijacker can strike at any time.
? Be very cautious when arriving at or departing from your home.
? Keep a lookout and be prepared to drive away quickly, if you must. (Be careful never to endanger anyone’s life). Have an emergency plan. Decide which is the best way to escape if there was an attempted hijacking in your driveway. Could you drive down the pavement, or over a concrete island for example?
? Make sure you are not followed to or from your home. If you are followed, go to the nearest police station or a place where there are many people. Avoid quiet streets or areas. Petrol stations all have security cameras that highjackers want to avoid. Go to a garage and stop in the middle of the courtyard somewhere.
? When approaching your home, look around for any suspicious loiterers or vehicles and report them to the authorities immediately.
? Try not to reverse out of your driveway. When leaving your premises, always try and face the road.
? If you do not already have a remote-controlled gate, you may want to consider installing one. (Consult the experts as automated gates can also present a security threat)
? Avoid establishing fixed patterns. This increases the risk of victimisation by observant, potential hijackers.
? If you arrive home and notice something suspicious, like the dogs not coming to welcome you, drive on! Go to the nearest police station or follow one of the other suggestions in this section.
? Always keep car doors locked and windows closed.
? Keep an eye on your neighbours’ houses. Ask them to do the same for you. Report the presence of loiterers to the police.
? Remember, if you become a victim of carjacking, don’t resist. Your life is more valuable than the most expensive car.
? Be aware that hijackers sometimes impersonate police or traffic officials. They use vehicles with flashing blue lights and some even have access to police uniforms.

With the summer months upon us, its time for a reminder about the dangers of leaving your pet in a parked car. Whether youre parking in the shade, just running into the store, or leaving the windows cracked, it is still not ok to leave your pet in a parked car.
The temperature inside a car can skyrocket after just a few minutes. Parking in the shade or leaving the windows cracked does very little to alleviate this pressure cooker.
On a warm, sunny day try turning your car off, cracking your windows and sitting there. It will only be a few short minutes before it becomes unbearable. Imagine how your helpless pet will feel. On an 85-degree day, for example, the temperature inside a car with the windows cracked can reach 102 degrees within only ten minutes. After 30 minutes, the temperature will reach 120 degrees. At 110 degrees, pets are in danger of heatstroke. On hot and humid days, the temperature in a car parked in direct sunlight can rise more than 30 degrees per minute, and quickly become lethal.
Stanford University School of Medicine conducted a study to measure the temperature rise inside a parked car on sunny days with highs ranging from 72 to 96 degrees F. Their results showed that a cars interior can heat up by an average of 40 degrees F within an hour, regardless of ambient temperature. Ambient temperature doesnt matter – its whether its sunny out. Eighty percent of the temperature rise occurred within the first half hour. Even on a relatively cool day, the temperature inside a parked car can quickly spike to life-threatening levels if the sun is out.
Further, the researchers noted that much like the sun warms a greenhouse in winter; it also warms a parked car on cool days. In both cases, the sun heats up a mass of air trapped under glass. Precautions such as cracking a window or running the air conditioner prior to parking the car were found to be inadequate.
Pets are very susceptible to overheating as they are much less efficient at cooling themselves than people are. The solution is simple – leave your pets at home if the place you are going does not allow pets.
Dogs are designed to conserve heat. Their sweat glands, which exist on their nose and the pads of their feet, are inadequate for cooling during hot days. Panting and drinking water helps cool them, but if they only have hot air to breathe, dogs can suffer brain and organ damage after just 15 minutes. Short-nosed breeds, young pets, seniors or pets with weight, respiratory, cardiovascular or other health problems are especially susceptible to heat-related stress.
Signs of heat stress include: heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid pulse, unsteadiness, a staggering gait, vomiting or a deep red or purple tongue. If a pet becomes overheated, immediately lowering their body temperature is a must.
- Move the pet into the shade and apply cool (not cold) water all over their body to gradually lower their temperature.
- Apply ice packs or cool towels to the pets head, neck and chest only.
- Allow the pet to drink small amounts of cool water or lick ice cubes.
- Then take the pet to the nearest vet.
Animal Services Officers or other law enforcement officers are authorized to remove any animal left in an unattended vehicle that is exhibiting signs of heat stress by using the amount of force necessary to remove the animal, and shall not be liable for any damages reasonably related to the removal. The pet owner may be charged with animal cruelty.
Creating greater awareness is the key to preventing pets from this unnecessary suffering. Below are some tips to help spread the word:
- A good start is to let friends know about the dangers of leaving their pets in a parked car and remind them to keep their pets at home on warm sunny days if theyll be going anywhere pets are not allowed.
- The Humane Society of the United States has posters available for a nominal fee that store managers can post inside their windows to remind shoppers that Leaving Your Pet in a Parked Car Can Be a Deadly Mistake. They also have similar hot car flyers.
- Get involved. If you see a pet in a parked car during a warm sunny day, go to the nearest store and have the owner paged. Enlist the help of a local police officer or security guard or call the local police department or animal control office.

Are you looking for a great family vacation destination this summer? Are you looking for a vacation that allows you both exciting adventure and quiet down time? If you are then Sherkston Shores in Sherkston, Ontario, Canada may be just the place for you. My mom and dad have had a summer home there for over 40 years and I always look forward to getting up there for a long weekend or week of recreation and relaxation. There is plenty to do right at the resort and an amazing selection of activities within a 45 minute drive or less.
If swimming is your thing, Sherkstons options are great. First there is the crystal clear water of Lake Erie. Yes, I said crystal clear. This water is so clean that you can see the bottom from a boat in 20 feet of water. Next is the old stone quarry. The guarded quarry beach is perfect for everyone because near the shore the water is shallow and perfect for the kids but beyond the ropes the water gets very deep very quickly for you more adventurous swimmers. My father tells me that this was a working stone quarry that hit water and flooded very quickly.
He goes on to say that there are some very interesting things buried at the bottom of the quarry including a railroad car and construction machinery. I dont know if this is true but there is a scuba diving club that dives at the far end of the quarry every week so there must be something down there worth exploring. Next there are two swimming pools with hot tubs that offer recreational swimming and water aerobics classes and finally there are four water slides that are great for the kids. Yes, Sherkston has everything the swimmer could possibly want except the ocean.
There are many other activities within the resort for the entire family. There is an 18 hole miniature golf course and a recently completed nine hole pitch and putt course for the golfers in your family. There are basketball and tennis courts and, since were in Canada, youll often find groups of kids playing street or roller hockey on the courts. There is also a Main Street area in the resort that has a well stocked camp store, an arcade for the kids, a church and a doughnut shop (donuts are very popular in Canada). Finally, there is a restaurant/bar that has live entertainment and adult beverages for those over the age of 19.
In part two of this series on Sherkston and the surrounding area, Ill focus on my favorite activity in the resort, the unbelievable smallmouth bass fishing. If youre a fisherman, youre going to want to check this out.

Located in Southwest Utah and Northern Arizona, Lake Powell is a man-made reservoir on the Colorado River, and part of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, and one of the most scenic lakes in the United States.
Lake Powell is the second lake in size nationwide, with the capacity to store about 26,999,814 acre feet of water when it is at its maximum volume and boasting about 1,900 miles (3,057 km) or shoreline, a coast larger than the Pacific West Coast.
The lake has a total surface of 266 miles on the edge of the Colorado Plateau, featuring 96 major side canyons with the typical fine red-rock of the Desert of Utah, at an elevation of 3,700 feet (1,127 meters)
A project which originally was born in the late 1940s as part of a series of Colorado River dams is today a popular tourist destination with about 3 million visitors each year, a place where you can enjoy a range of activities for all the family.
As a premier fishing destination, Lake Powell offers to expert fishermen and anglers a variety of carp, suckers, and catfish, natives to the region, but also other introduced species, including walleye, bass, crappie, and bluegill, among others.
People who enjoy archeological sites will be able to discover the roots of Ancient Native American tribes that once lived here, such as the Anasazi, term that the Navajo used to describe the Ancestral Puebloan culture of this region.
Canyons along the Colorado River are silent witnesses of those civilizations that left numerous petroglyphs, pictographs, corn cobs, baskets, pot shards, dwellings and storage rooms to make your visit to Lake Powell a fascinating adventure.
If you like to drive, Lees Ferry is the only natural corridor between Utah and Arizona, down the river from Glen Canyon Dam, where you can enjoy a drive. Otherwise, hike those remote canyons of the Orange Cliffs, or get ready for mountain biking through primitive roads of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.
There are campgrounds and RV Park facilities featuring horseback riding, hunting and fishing activities, but keep in mind that temperatures at Lake Powell range from 110ฐ Fahrenheit (38ฐ C) in Summer to Oฐ Fahrenheit (-16ฐ C) in Winter so you can plan the best time for traveling.
Some people believe a desert-like destination may lack interesting activities, but all the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area has plenty of recreational activities, including aerial tours, river running, rappelling, rock climbing, bird and animal watching.
However, you can enjoy activities like those of other tourist destinations, such as shopping, visiting museums, entertainment venues, or dinning at your hotel or bed and breakfast facility, or any local restaurant, most of them located in the city of Page, Arizona.
Page is Lake Powells residential area with a population of 8,000 inhabitants, offering world-class facilities to locals and visitors. There are numerous Marinas around this city, offering boat rentals, skiing, guided and educational tours, golfing, and many other activities.
One of the major attractions in Page is the John Wesley Powell Memorial Museum, housing photos, and memorabilia of Major Powell, the man after whom Lake Powell was named. This museum also showcases temporary exhibits such as Discover Dinosaurs.
Lake Powell is also the scene of diverse festivals and artistic events throughout the year, including the popular Pumpkin Festival, celebrated annually on Halloweens eve.
When visiting the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, remember that several areas are governed by different rules and regulations and not all the places are designated open sites. As an example, camping is not allowed within archaeological areas and overnight backcountry use often requires a permit.
Lake Powell is also governed by different boating regulations, including those of Arizona, Utah, and the US Coast Guard. Sites like the Rainbow Bridge National Monument, in Utah, can only be accessed by boat and requires a permit from the Navajo Nation.
Wherever you go, a brand new experience awaits you at Lake Powell, where just one visit is never enough to discover the many attractions of this unique state-of-the-art destination./pbr

Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic is an extraordinarily beautiful city. Standing on the banks of the river Vltava (the locals generally use the German name for it the Moldau). Few wars or natural disaster ever reach here and the architectural heritage has been beautifully preserved. It is also know as the Hundred Spired City due to the many churches that adorn the city streets.
Much of the street plan, in as much as there is one, is medieval. And will come as a surprise (hopefully a pleasant one) to anyone used to living in a grid pattern North American city.
The city still boasts many beautiful buildings dating from the baroque period; a sight lost to much of Europe, that suffered so much in the devastation of two world wars. The canter of the city is a pleasure to walk around. Much of it is dating from the 14th century, when Charles IV started the university and built the New Town area of the city.
Prague only established itself as the capital in 1918 with the creation of Czechoslovakia. It remained under Soviet control until 1989, when the Velvet Revolution gently broke the grip of the failing Soviet Union.
Nowadays the city has thriving cafes, clubs and shops, where the newly wealthy and the inspirational window shopper can keep themselves amused for hours on end. The boulevards contain everything from traditional Czech souvenirs to the latest hi tech modern electrical gadgetry.
Must See Prague:
? Charles Bridge: built in the 14th century, it was believed at the time, that odd numbers were lucky. The builders started work at 5:31 on the day 9/7/1352 very odd, but maybe effective, as the bridge is still standing today!
? St.Nicholas Church: When building work finished in 1756 Prague had one of the finest Baroque churches in Europe and it still retains that position today. There is a huge painting of St. Nicholas in the nave and a wonderful bell tower. Mozart gave a recital here and there are still frequent classical concerts throughout the week
? Prague Castle: Now the home of the president, it was previously the seat of the Czech royal family. It is surrounded by palaces and features an army museum. The changing of the guard takes place every hour and, as with some other European Capitals it is quite a spectacle. Bring a camera.
? The Old Town Square: Built before the 12th century this is the oldest and most historic square in Prague. It is made up of many interesting buildings including many from the baroque period. Many of the buildings are brightly colored and there are many pavement cafes, where you can relax and watch the world go by.
? The National Technical Museum: Although unimaginatively (though accurately) titled, this is a fascinating collection of all things technical. With everything, from a railway carriage belonging to the Archduke Ferdinand, (whose assassination sparked the outbreak of the first world war), to a working reconstruction of a working coal mine.
? Vhsyrad Castle: Over a thousand years old and a former home of the Czech nobility, this castle has an impressive pedigree. Take a stroll on top of the ramparts for a great view of the city and river. There is a wonderful gothic church, a museum and a cemetery, where the composer Dvorzac the Author of the New World Symphony is buried.
? Petrin Park: One of the hidden gems of Prague There is a rose garden, a maze and a gate to a well cultivated garden, but the real sight is from the tip of the hill. Take the short cable car ride to the top and there is the Petrin tower, basically a smaller copy of the Eiffel Tower. It is an outstanding viewpoint and well worth the effort.
Food and drink in Prague are both hearty (as you would expect in Eastern Europe) and affordable. You must try the dumplings and the beer is some of the finest on the continent. It is also the original home of Budweiser and they still make their own, some would say superior version.
The hotels are more expensive than they used to be, but are still affordable. Look around for the best bargains. The transport, mainly buses and trams, is very good. Although English is not as common as in many parts of Europe, a lot of the locals speak a few words. It is always worth asking directions, as they are polite and friendly people. A visit to Prague will not disappoint but dont go in winter unless you have a good coat./pbr

What better way to see the sights of London than on a coach trip? There is nothing nicer than being shown round all of the sights by a professional tour guide who knows exactly what they’re talking about. Most tour operators have their own itinerary for a tour round London but you can always make up your own.
If you’re visiting London why not visit the London Eye. Standing tall against the river Thames, the London eye gives you the opportunity to view from high the sights of London. Once finished there you could pop over the bridge to the houses of parliament. Where England’s government resides, This building is magnificent and is right next to Big Ben! Another sight to see has to be Buckingham palace, if you’re lucky you may even catch them at the change of the guard. After that why not have a spot of lunch and maybe try a bit of shopping in Covent garden. Covent garden is always full of street entertainers so why not sit back and enjoy being entertained. If shopping is your thing then you have to visit Harrods! The biggest department store (and the most expensive) holds all sorts of souvenirs of London and is a great place to grab some goodies.
Other famous sights include the tower of London, where the crown jewels are kept. Or maybe try the London Dungeons. If scary sights aren’t for you then you could spend the afternoon at the zoo, with loads of animals this attraction is particularly good for families. There are also many museums such as the natural history museum and the science museum. They have lots of new exhibitions and a lot of them are hands on too.
If you’re looking for something to do in the evening then why not try one of the world famous restaurants such as the Rainforest Caf

India’s railway network connects its greatest cities with its remotest villages, and traveling across India by train will give you a great opportunity to see sites not accessible any other way. Traveling by train during your stay in India can be one of the high points of your journey, but only if you plan carefully and know what to expect.
Booking passage on second-class non–air-conditioned trains will let you view the passing scenery through open windows, free of the film which covers the windows in air-conditioned cars. Purchasing a seat in air-conditioned car, on the other hand, will keep you comfortable even in the peak of India’s hot season. India’s trains, especially those which travel to the smaller villages, have a reputation for being late, so you will have to get used to delays.
If you find yourself waiting to get a connecting train, however, take time to observe your surroundings and immerse yourself in the chaos around you. You will see food vendors offering snacks like deep thought pride whole wheat bread and hard-boiled eggs as borders with massive piles of luggage balanced on their heads guard in and around the crowds. You should always stay close to your own luggage when traveling by train in India, to the point of chaining it to the rack in your sleeping compartment. Chains are available for sale on the platforms at urban railway stations.
While larger railway lines include meals in the cost of a ticket, if you are traveling a smaller line to be much better off by bringing along your own package snacks, bottled water, sandwiches, and juice. You will also be very glad you bring sanitary hand wipes are and your own toilet paper.
India, of course, has some world class luxury train service in addition to its ordinary commuter trains. These luxury trains include some of the most famous names in the world: Palace on Wheels; the Fairy Queen; the Royal Orient; Kalka Shimla; and Deccan Odyssey. Each of these magnificent trains follows a different route, but all of them offer exceptional service, dining, and luxurious accommodations. The most famous of them, Palace on Wheels, has 14 opulent sleeping compartments with baths along with two full-service restaurants and a bar.
The Palace on Wheel’s “Week in Wonderland” trip, starting at $4900 per person double occupancy, makes a round-trip beginning in Delhi and progressing through (among other cities) Jaipur, Udaipur, Bharatpur, and Agra before returning to Delhi. The fare includes meals, accommodations, and all sightseeing. The Fairy Queen, which began operating in 1855, is the world’s oldest steam locomotive.
The most legendary of all Indian train journeys, however, is the the 15 day trip taken by the private train the Viceroy of India, which runs between Mumbai to Calcutta four times each year. Tickets on the Viceroy of India run $9995 for Viceroy Class, or $14,995 for the Maharaja Suite.
The Deccan Odyssey is a 21-power luxury train which follows a seven day route along Maharashtra’s coast in western India, leaving from Mumbai and passing along the beach after unspoiled beach until arriving at the Goa. The trip includes a visit to Pune and the opportunity to explore the Ajanta and Ellore caverns. The Deccan Odyssey travels by night and stops for sightseeing during the day. The price of the journey includes five-star meals, an on-board Ayurvedic spa, a gym, and much, much more.
You can get almost all the information you need regarding train travel in India by visiting the website at http://www.indianrail.gov.in, where you’ll find railway routes, ticket availability, and prices for all the country’s trains. You cannot, however, book your tickets online. For that, you will need to use the services of your hotel or travel agent.
